Abstract

The primary goal of this research is to figure out the students' narrative reading comprehension at the eleventh grader of Vocational High School (SMK) Muhamadiyah Sekampung in the academic year of 2015/2016. The researcher tries to relizes that directed reading thinking acrtivity (DRTA) strategy can be one of the teaching strategy to improve the students' narrative reading comprehension.

In this case the researcher conducts classroom action research (CAR) which is done in two cycles. Each cycle consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 22 students of the eleventh graders of SMK Muhammadiyah Sekampung East Lampung. In collecting data the researcher used test (pre-test, post test 1 and post test 2), observation, and documentation. The research is conducted collaboratively with an English teacher of SMK Muhammadiyah Sekampung East Lampung.

The finding of the research shows that directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) strategy can be used as a teaching strategy of reading. It provided by the average score result of pre-test and post-test show that there were increased score. In post-test I 66 and post test II 72, it increased 6. The researcher concluded that there was significant improvement of directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) strategy on the reading comprehension skill at the eleventh grader of SMK Muhammadiyah Sekampung East Lampung.
