Abstract

Teaching reading in the eighth graders of junior high school level is one of grammatical items that is very important. Ideally, the students should be able to read and comprehend all of aspects in reading. However, most of students still found difficulties in comprehension when they read. In this case, the researcher selected short story as media to teach reading comprehension. The objectives ofthis study was to investigate whether the use of short story as media influence toward the students' reading comprehension at the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Batanghari Nuban. The subject in this research were the students of class VIII A. In this research, the students were given by pre-test before conducting of research without giving treatment and post-test after conducting of research by giving treatment.

This research was quantitative research and conducted at SMPN 3 Batanghari Nuban with amount of sample 24 students. Sampling technique which is used to determine the amount of sample was simple random sampling. In data collecting of researcher applied method of test, observation, and documentation. The researcher used test to measure the level of understanding of students' reading comprehension, to know the level of understanding of students' reading comprehension, the researcher used multiple choice test 20 items the short story of descriptive. To know whether there is the positive and influence of using short story as media toward students' reading comprehension, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test.

Finally the result of this study shows that "t ratio" 20.498 was bigger than "t table" 5% (2,07) and 1% (2,81). And x2 ssserve is 10.208 and x2 ae in 0.05= 5.99 and 0.01 = 9.21. Therefore, it could been concluded that Ha was accepted and Null hypothesis was rejected. It mean that there was a significant influence of using short story as media toward students' reading comprehension of eighth graders at SMPN 3 Batanghari Nuban.
