Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know whether communicative language teaching approach can increase the students' speaking ability at the tenth graders of MA Ma'rif 8 Bangunrejo Central Lampung. In this research, the researcher gives pre-test to know the students' ability in speaking and test in each cycle to know the result of the student's ability in speaking after using communicative language teaching approach.

This research is classroom action research design, where the people who want using this research must be seeing processing of teaching and learning directly, then taking the conclusion of the research was done. The classroom action research was conducted by 2 cycles. There are four steps in each cycle; they are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The researcher gave one pre test when pre-survey, one treatment, and test on the end of each cycle. The subjects of this action research are the tenth graders of MA Ma'arif 8 Bangunrejo.

Based on the research had done, the researcher could know that by using Communicative Language Teaching as approach of teaching speaking ability can increase the students' speaking ability. In fact, it can be seen from their average score in pre-test 60.3, 64.11 in test of cycle I become 76.05 in test of cycle 2. It means that the students could achieve the target; the target was 75% students gained score 72 or more.

Using communicative language teaching as an approach in learnni g
process, especially English subject of speaking could increase the students' speaking ability. The student more active and have better self-confidence to speak and explore their ability in speaking.
