Abstract
The objectives of this research are to know the level of vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability at the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in the academic year of 2013/2014 and to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability.
This research was conducted at the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah l Metro that consist of 25 students. This is a quantitative research design. The writer used documentation and test as data collection method. Moreover, the writer used test to measure both of the variables. Moreover, the writer measured the level of vocabulary mastery of the students by giving vocabulary mastery test. Furthermore, the writer measured the level of descriptive writing ability of the students by testing them to write a simple descriptive text.
To investigate whether there is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability at the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah I Metro in the academic year of 2013/2014, the writer analyzes the data by using product moment correlation. With the value of"r hitung" is 0, 7309, and r table in the level of 5% is 0,413 and in the level of 1% is 0,526.
After considering the product moment table by using df 23, it can be know that "r hitung" is bigger than r table. Therefore, it can be inferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability at the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah I Metro in the academic year of2013/2014.
Furthermore, the writer measured the level of correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability at the ttenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah I Metro in the academic year of 2013/2014 by counting the square of "r hitung" and multiplying it by 100% = (r hitung)' X 100% = (0,7309 X 100% = 53, 421481%. Based on the analysis above, it can be inferred that the level of the correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability is 53, 421481.
