Abstract

English as an International language has an important role to develop science and technologies. For many years, English has been the most important foreign language in Indonesia, which is taught from Elementary School to University. However, in senior high school. Language is the system of communication in speech and writing that is used by people of a particular country. We know that learn English must include four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The problem the writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of grammatical errors. The primary goal of this research, furthermore, was to figure out common errors which are grammatically done in using Past Tense in Senior High School I Mesuji Timur. Especially, in using of To Be and Verb in the form of Past Tense. Most of the students did not understand yet about using of To Be and Verb in Positive, Negative, and Interrogative sentences. Then, A qualitative
descriptive was used to approach the data. The data were collected by observation, documentation, interview, and test. Miles and Huberman model was used to analyze the data.

Regarding to the process of researching, the writer, firstly, collected the data
from Senior High School I Mesuji Timur. Then, the writer analyzed them by finding the errors in using simple past tense. After that, the writer displayed all the result of
his findings. The result of analysis illustrated the frequency of errors in using To Be was 33%, and Verb was 56%.

In conclusion, it showed that most of the twelfth grades of Senior High School 1 Mesuji Timur still difficult in using Past Tense in writing narrative text. Especially, when they use Verb. Most of them don't know how use the regular and irregular verb, and how use verb in positive, negative and interrogative sentences. That caused because, they seldom use English in their life everyday.
