Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether the use of constant and never ending improvement (can) as a strategy could increase the students' speaking performance ofthe eleventh grade at SMA Negeri I Raman Utara.

This research is categorized to Classroom Action Research (CAR). It is carried out to solve the students' speaking performance. There some problems found in this research, such as lack vocabulary, low confident to speak up in English, low motivation to lear English and hard to expressed idea in English. It consists of four phases; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This research is conducted in 2 cycles. subject of this research is the students of the eleventh grade science two of SMA Negeri I Raman Utara. In collecting the data, this research used test, observation, documentation and field note.

The results of the research showed that, from two cycles, the average scores of students' speakingperformanceare(a) 45.71in pre-test, and (b) 63,57 in post-test 1 as well as (c) 77,14 in post-test 2. The students' activities remained the same way. The students' activities in cycle I can be reported that there were (a) I5 active students (7142%) and 6 inactive students (28.57%). In cycle 2, the students' activities consisted of2 lactive students (100%) and 0 inactive students (0%). This research conclusion is constant and never ending improvement (CAN) strategywas able to increase the students' speaking performance.Constant and never ending improvement (CANI) strategy can be uscd as the alternative strategy in teaching learning process especially in speaking performance.
