Abstract

Writing is the skill to express ideas, opinion, and feelings to other people in written symbols to make other people or readers understand the ideas conveyed. Writing seems effectively to share information, opinion, arguments and ideas. Meanwhile, critical thinking is about way to presenting a set of reasons. It also related to share some opinion or argument. When someone gives arguments, actually he/she is thinkin g process to tend critically. Besides, other people could identify how well our knowledge about argument or not by writing performance. Nevertheless, the result of the students' argumentative writing performance at the English education program was still low. So, this research focused on the effect of students' critical thinking ability on their argumentative writing performance. Then, wish their argumentative writing performance improves as their critical thinking grew.

This research was conducted at the English education study program of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. Then, the subject of this research was the students in class D and it consists of 34 students. This research was quantitative research design. The writer used test, documentation, and observation as data collection method. Moreover, the writer used test to measure argumentative writing performance and critical thinkin g ability. Furthermore, this research used treatment to enhancing argumentative writing performance.

The results of data analysis using t-test, it were tobserved = 10,443, t table for the 5% level = 0,344 and for the 1% level = 0,442. The result showed that the coefficient analysis of tobserved = 10,443 was greater than rtable = 0,344. It means that robserved = 10,443 were significant. It can be inferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is a positive and significant effect between the students' critical thinking and argumentative writing performance in English education study program in academic year of 2014/2015.
