Abstract

Speaking is one of capabilities in mastering a language. This ability can also be one of factors that determine someone success in learning a language including English. Whereas, mastering speaking is difficult because it involves other capabilities which support it, such as pronunciation, fluency, intonation, and accuracy. As a foreign language, students practice English speaking in their classroom only. Therefore, students required learning technique which is appropriated. The technique that can be used is Team Assisted Individualization (TAI). The purpose of the research is to find the influence of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) technique toward students' speaking performance.

This research is quantitative research which deals with one class pre-test post-test design. This research was conducted at the eighth graders of SMP Darul 'Ulum Sekampung that involve of 31 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used tests and documentation, meanwhile the data analysis technique that the researcher used is t-test formula. It used to investigate the differences technique). between pre -test (before applying TAI technique) and post-test (after applying TAI technique)

The results of data analysis showed that t-observed =7.579 was higher than "t_table"=2,042 in 5% and "t_table"=2,750 in 1 %. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Based on the result, it can be inferred that Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) technique gave positive influence toward students' speaking performance at the eighth graders of of SMP Darul 'Ulum Sekampung. Therefore, it suggests that teachers can utilize and apply the benefit of TAI technique to enhance the speaking performance of their students.
