Abstract

This research discuss about derivational affixes. The aims of this research are to know the derivational affixes and the types of derivational affixes. This research is a qualitative descriptive research which analyzes and collects the derivational affixes. The data source is a Tere Liye‟s novel Earth translated by Gill Westaway. The steps used in collecting the data were deciding a novel, reading Earth novel, underlining the words contain derivational affixes, collecting the data and analyze data according its type. Morphology is a study of how new words are formed from combination of morphemes. Meanwhile derivational affixes are a part of morphemes that cannot stand alone as a word. Words that attached by derivational affixes are formed a new word with different meaning and sometimes also change the word class. The result show that there are 286 derivational affixes found in the Earth novel with 7 types namely: adverbs derived from adjectives (176), noun derived from nouns (4), nouns derived from member of other word class (77), adjectives derived from adjectives (4), adjectives derived from member of other word class (16), verbs derived from verbs (8), verb derived from member of other word class (1). From 286 words there are 22 derivational affixes found, namely: –ly (176), - (i)an (1), -ist (2), –ity (6), –ness (18), -ance (7), -ence (5), -ment (5), -((a)t)ion (37), un- (1), (in-, il-, ir-, im-) (3), –able (2), –ent (6), –ive (4), –ful (2), -less (1) - al (1), un- (1), dis- (7), -ize (1).
