Abstract
Muhadharah extracurricular activities at Darul A’mal Islamic Boarding School Metro serve as an important medium for training students in public speaking skills. However, based on interviews with the female student administrators of the boarding school, it was found that there are still issues regarding the low motivation of students to participate in this activity. Some students show a lack of enthusiasm and feel insecure when speaking in front of an audience. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the implementation of muhadharah activities, the factors influencing students' motivation to participate, and its impact on their self-confidence.
This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving the boarding school administrators, students, and other relevant parties. To ensure data validity, this study applies source triangulation by comparing information from various informants and technique triangulation by comparing the results of observations, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis techniques used include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
Research findings show that the muhadharah activity at Pondok Pesantren Darul A’mal Metro is conducted regularly every month, featuring various forms of public speaking practice such as serving as an MC, reciting verses from the Qur'an, leading tahlil, delivering speeches, and leading prayers. The muhadharah activity has a positive impact on students' motivation and self-confidence in public speaking. Students who actively participate in this activity demonstrate improvements in courage, fluency, and the ability to express ideas more clearly and structurally. Supporting factors include support from the school administrators in guiding and evaluating the students after each muhadharah session, a regular schedule that ensures students have consistent opportunities to practice, encouragement from peers and female teachers (ustadzah) who provide motivation and support to students lacking self-confidence, and a supportive environment within the pesantren that fosters students’ willingness to practice public speaking. Inhibiting factors include low intrinsic motivation among some students who still feel reluctant or afraid to speak in public, persistent fear and lack of self-confidence especially among first-time participants, and limited practice, which results in students who rarely participate struggling to improve their speaking skills.
