Abstract

Interference is the use of a native language pattern or role which leads to an error or mistake form in the using of target language. This phenomenon occurs because the limited language knowledge of students in the target language instruction. In this research, the writer concerns with students' Indonesian interference on their English paragraph. Therefore, the goal of this study is to investigate the interference that occurs on the student English paragraph. In this research the writer uses qualitative method. The type of this research is case study. Furthermore, purposive sampling is the technique that is used to choose the participants. The participants in this research are 10 students at second semester in English education study program of STAIN Jurai Siwo metro. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation and interview. The result of the study shows that the students had done first language interference on their English paragraph. The types of the interference consist of 21% morphological interference, 51% syntactical interference and 28% lexical interference. The using of Indonesian role on the students' English paragraph is caused that they feel difficult to find out appropriate equivalence in changing Indonesian role into English context. Besides, the students have low proficiency in mastering English pattern or role. To prevent the students' first language interference in the writing class, cooperative learning method is used by the lecturer in the English instruction.
