Abstract
Reading speed is the reading proces for quickly getting understanding from a text without reducing comprehension and retention toward the text. It requires the students to read the reading material with an appropriate speed. If the students read the text too slow, the students feels bore with the materials. Meanwhile, if the students read the materials too fast, the readers reduce the change to remember or retain the details of important information. Reading is a complex process that involves multi and complex interaction between the reader and the text. In other word, the reader who has capability in reading words fluently and correctly has a little value that the reader can comprehend the information containing in the text. Reading speed is the multi interaction that involves multi interaction such as reading with appropriate speed, method, technique and strategy. It makes the students create a multi and complex interaction toward the text. Therefore, this research will prove and calculate the correlation between the students' reading speed and the students' reading comprehension. The goal of this research is to know what is the level of students' reading speed and reading comprehension correlation among the fifth semester students of English Education Program of STAIN Metro in academic year 2012/2013. It is shown by numeric data analysis with statistic methodology. This research was conducted in STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro with 36 repondents. This research is quantitave research. In other word, in collecting data the writer used test method to measure students' reading speed and reading comprehension among the fifth semester students of English Education Program of STAIN Metro in academic year 2012/2013. Besides, to know the level of correlation significancy between students' reading speed and reading comprehension among the fifth semester students of English Education Program of STAIN Metro in academic year 2012/2013 the writer analyzed the dara using Product-moment corellation formula. The result of data analysis shows that "r observed" is 0,719, "r table" is 0,339 or 0,436, after considering the Product Moment table by using df 34 it can be found that the critical value of r Product Moment for the 5% level is 0,339 and for the 1% level is 0,436. Finally, the data confirmed that "r observed" is higher than "r table". Therefore, it can be inferred that Hi is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is a positive and significant correlation between students' reading speed and reading comprehension among the fifth semester students of English Education Program of STAIN Metro in academic year 2012/2013.
