Abstract

The differences between English and Indonesian grammar system caused difficulties among the students of Senior High School to understand English. For example, if a sentence "Seorang wanita yang membeli kamus" translated into English grammatically, it should be "A woman who buys dictionary" and not "A woman who buy a dictionary". It can be understood that the verb in English grammatical system should be changed according to the form of subject and time, while in bahasa Indonesia it is should not. This difficulties became worse because the English grammar learning was not supported by the proper teaching aid. The writer found this condition at the eleventh class of MAN 2 Metro. Therefore this research was aimed to exploring the influence of poetry as an interesting teaching aid towards the students' grammar mastery. This research used quantitative design. The population of this research was 286 students of the eleventh class students of MAN 2 Metro. The writer use cluster random sampling that consisted of 33 students. The data collection method was test. It consisted of pre-test and post-test. The purpose of those test were to know how far the students' grammar mastery before and after being given the treatment using poetry. The test is analyzed through t-test. In the calculation of interpretation of data, it is showed that there is a comparison between mean of pre-test and post-test. Mean of pre-test is 47.500 and mean of post-test is 83.939. The writer interpreted tobserved to table with df=32 on level significant 5%, got the data of tobserved is 15.841 with ttable is 2.042. In the other words tobserved is higher than ttable. Besides on the result of the analysis data above, it can be inferred that that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is positive and significant influence of using poetry towards the students' grammar mastery among the eleventh class students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Metro in the academic year 2011/2012.
