Abstract

The differences between English and Indonesian Grammar system caused difficulties among the students of Senior High School to understand English language. It became worse when the English grammar instruction was not supported by the proper teaching aid. The writer found this condition at the eleventh class students of MAN 2 Metro. In that, the teacher did not have interesting teaching aid in teaching English grammar. Therefore, this research was aimed at exploring the influence of diary as the interesting teaching aid toward the students' grammar mastery. This research used quantitative design. The population of this research was 287 students of eleventh class of MAN 2 Metro. I used cluster sampling that consisted of 31 students. The data collation method was test. It consisted of pre test and post test. The purpose of those tests were to know how far the students' grammar mastery before and after being given the treatment using diary. The tests analyzed through t test. The result of this research shows there is increasing from the pre test and post test. The average score of that is higher than the pre test. The average score of pre test is 36.781 and the average score of the post-test is 71.435. I interpret t observed to t table with df = 30 on level significant 5%, get the data of t observed is 21.792 with t table is 2.042. Therefore, it can be asserted there is positive and significant influence of diary toward the students' grammar mastery among the eleventh class students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Metro in the academic year 2010/2011. It means that diary is a good teaching aid in teaching English grammar instruction because the students can practice the grammar on their diaries.
