Abstract

The primary goal of this research was to find out the description of the correlation among affix mastery (X₁), cohesion mastery (X₂) and writing performance (Y) among the students taking Writing IV course at State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2011/2012. The population of the research was the students who took Writing IV course and the sample of the research was 60 students. The data were gained through affix mastery tests, cohesion mastery tests and the result of writing IV and was analyzed by Analysis Double Regression through SPSS. The problem which had been identified was the students could not write coherently since their affix mastery and cohesion mastery are lack. Here, affix mastery and cohesion mastery played an essential role which determined the level of the students' writing performance. In this case, the writer tried to investigate whether there was correlation among affix mastery, cohesion mastery and writing performance. Furthermore, the tests were used to collect the data of affix mastery, cohesion mastery and writing performance. The test of affix mastery was used to measure the level of students' affix mastery and consisted of 50 questions. Then, the test of cohesion mastery comprehension was used to measure the students' cohesion mastery and consisted of 60 questions. Each item consisted of four choices, A, B, C, and D. Moreover, the result of the data analysis illustrates that Robserved = 0.912, 0.957, and 0.987 are consulted Rtable of 5%= 0.211 and 1%= 0.295. Therefore, it can be known that the Robserved is higher than Rtable. As a result, it can be concluded that there is any positve and significant correlation between affix mastery and writing performance and also there is any positive and significant between cohesion mastery and cohesion mastery. Moreover, Fobserved = 14.734. Next, Fobserved is consulted to Fiable of the significant level of 5% = 0.315 and 1% = 0.498. Finally, the data confirms F observed is higher than F table. Thus, it can be inferred that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. There is positive and significant correlation among the students' affix mastery, writing mastery and writing performance among the fifth semester students of English Education Study Program of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro.
