Abstract

Listening skill is essential for learning since it enable students to acquire insight information, and to achieve success in communicating with others. Listening activity need concentration of listener. In other word, learning of listening is difficult. Song is short of music using words which can be sung. Song not only as media in learning English but also as media in listening skill. The problem that writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of listening skill. The object of this research was seventeen students of the fifth grade of students' at SDN 2 Gunung Sari Central Lampung in Academic Year 2012/2013. The design of the research was a classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles, in cycle I was done in one meeting and cycle II was done in two meetings. In this research the students were given pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The research aimed to find out whether the use songs could increase the students' participation and students' skill in learning listening skill. The data collection method in this research was observation, test, documentation, and field note. The observation was employed to gather the data of students' activities and the test was done to gather the data of students' skill in learning listening skill. The purpose of pre-test and post-test are to know how far the students' have mastered in listening skill before and after being given treatment. The criteria of students' who got score at least 60. The class could be said successful in achieving the material if 70 % of the students in that class got score at least 60 and they had activity at class more than 70 %. The result in cycle I showed that the average percentage of active students 58,82 and in cycle II was 86,27 The average of pre-test score in cycle 1 was 37,05 or 3 students success, and post-test1 62,94 or 14 students success and the average posttest2 in cycle 2 was 84,70 or 17 students success. It was increase 21,76 point. This fact showed that teaching English by using songs can increase the students' listening skill at SDN 2 Gunung Sari Central Lampung.
