Abstract
This research was aimed at finding out the description of the influence usingliteral translation ( x ) toward reading comprehension ( y ) among the students whotook seventh class at SMP N I Terbanggi Besar in the academic year of 2012/ 2013. The population of the research was students who took seventh class and the sample of the research was 60 students.
Consedering the result of presurvey, the researcher find many problems which had been identified like as: the students could not get information with using scanning reading, the students could not identify the purpose reading, the students could not get information using skimming reading, and the students could not analyze vocabulary. It was caused the students difficult translate meaning in text reading. Here, literal translation method one of method in translation, literal translation was translate based on grammatical and sentence pattern, So it simple method could use of students in translating english text.
This research was conducted at SMP N | Terbanggi Besar. The populations of this research were 150 students. Meanwhile, the total sample are 60 students, namely class VII A (30 students) as experimental class and class VII B (30 students) as control class.
Finally, the data prove that the T-observation > T- tables) 2.78 > 2.01. That proves that there is a significant influence on the use literal translation methods on the reading comprehension class VII students of SMP N | Terbanggi Besar.
