Abstract
Media is one of the important instruments to carry the messages from teacher to students in learning process in order to make the students understand about the materials. Therefore, teacher should be able to help the students comprehend the material by using a suitable media. Unfortunately, the use of suitable media cannot be optimized yet by the English teacher and this matter causes the students have difficulties in understanding tenses, especially present continuous tenses. In fact, based on the pre survey data, the students don't master them yet. So, the other technique in learning present continuous tenses is neeeded to solve this problem, one of the suitable media is song. And song can be the choice to teach these tenses material.
The researcher conducted Classroom Action research (CAR) which is done in two cycles. Every cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subject of this research is 47 students of the third semester of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. In collecting data the researcher used test, observation, documentation and field note. The research was conducted through collaborative with an Structure and Grammar lecturer of third semester STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro.
The result of the test shows that there is any increasing from pre-test and post-test. The average percentage of active students in cycle 1 is 74%, ad improves in cycle 2 become 89.14%. Moreover, the improvement also happens in the students' learning result. Based on the data taken from the test, the students' average score in pre test 59.56%, in post test of cycle 1 is 75.53%, and 91.27% in post test of cycle 2. From the data collected it show that the post test 2 results the highest score. So, it can concluded that the song can improve the students' present continuous tenses mastery at the third semester of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro in academic year 2012/2013.
