Abstract

The researcher had outlined the problem in this research focused in writing performance. It is based on data of problem identification found by the researcher, that students have not much motivation to write, students have low ability in grammar understanding, students did not know how to learn writing well, Most of students have difficult in writing; and students have low vocabulary. The primary goal of this research was to know the students' writing performance by using dicto-comp technique among the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Batanghari in academic year 2012/2013. Writing is a psychological activity of the language user to put information in the written text. Through written text, the student knows much knowledge that it can improve their ability and skill to do something. Dicto-comp technique is a technique that can guide the student to write English as a foreign language in writing performance by using a story as a media. This research was classroom action research consisted of 4 steps namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. For the data collecting methods, the researcher used test, observation, documentation and field note. Data analysis technique used qualitative and quantitative analysis. Regarding to the research process, the researcher gave the pre-test for the students to know their writing performance score. Then, the researcher did the treatment for the students. In addition, the improvement of the students' writing performance score could be known through post-test that had been given in every cycle. The type of test was written test. The result of this research illustrated the average of the students score in pre-test was 55.44, post-test 1 was 63.52 and post test 2 was 73.67. In conclusion, this research may be stated that by using dicto-comp technique, the students' writing performance among the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Batanghari in academic year 2012/2013 was increased.
