Abstract

Grammar translation method is one of the method that was used in teaching the foreign language in order that the students are can understand and students easier in teaching learning process by their native language. Grammar translation method is not a new method, and it is one of method which uses students to teach that foreign language would help to grow intellectually. Based on the result of pre-survey that was conducted in SMP N9 Metro on January 14h, 2013, from the mid test who was followed by 32 students, only 31.2% the students who passed in the mid of semester, and 68.8% the students failed with the minimum mastery criteria (KKM) is71 for English language. In learning process, the teacher was used the method, but the students cannot understand about the material. The writer hopes that by using Grammar translation method students' in teaching English language especially reading comprehension will be better. Because of Grammar translation method, students can achieve the reading comprehension easier. This research was quantitative. The research design was one group pre-test post-test design. In collecting the data, the writer administered pretest, treatments, and post-test. In analyzing the data, the T-Test was employed to reach the significant value.The result of the students' score before and after treatments implied that grammar translation method could increase reading comprehension. Based on the data analysis and the result of the computation of the data, the writer makes conclusion. The pre-test average score of control class was63,9. And the post-test average score of experimental class was 78,90. From the data analysis, it could be seen that: t-observed=8,02 while t-table=2.031 (5%), and 2.727 (1%). It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.Finally, the writer can conclude that there is any positive and significant influence of grammar translation method toward reading comprehension at the seventh grade of SMP N 9 Metro in academic year 2012/2013.
