Abstract

From the observation at State Elementary School 4th South Metro had been found some problems in teaching and learning process. These problems can be identified such as: the students need more motivation to utterance their idea in orally, the students have low vocabulary, the students feel afraid to make mistake in arrange the words in the sentences, the students feel shy to speak English. Based on the reasons above it needs to be held the research, this research conducted by using qualitative method to observe the improvement of students' speaking ability. This research held at State Elementary School 4th South Metro, Metro city. This research was held in two months which consist of three cycles. In each cycle consist of four steps and each step consists of three points such as: making lesson plan, observation and reflection. The result of the test shows that there were progressive from average score of pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, and post-test 3. From the result of pre-test and post-test 1 there were progressive of average score was 6 points. Whereas the average score of pre-test 1 was 52.69 and the average score of post-test 1 was 58.08. The result from the post-test 2 shows there were progressive of the average score from the average score of post-test 1 was 58.08 up to 63.46. It means there were progressive of average score was 5.38 points. The result from the post-test 3 shows there were progressive of average scorere from post-test 2 was 63.46 up to 71.54. It means there were progressive of average score 8.08 points. Based on the progressive above can be concluded that by using KWL technique can improve students speaking ability, especially at State Elementary School 4th South Metro in Academic Year 2012/2013.
