Abstract
The study of translation concerned with transferring the message from source language to target language. Studying translation would be always faced to different of language system between source language and target language. Translation shift was occurred in the translation process. Translation shift was the one important procedure in translation to keep the meaning of the source language and avoided the awkwardness.
This research was aimed to find out how are the passive-active translation shifts in Indonesia into English translation done by students of English Education Study Program in State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro. The characteristic of this research was qualitative research by applying Miles and Huberman models; namely collecting data, data reduction, data display and conclusing drawing. In this research, the data were collected by using documentation and interview. The technique sampling was purposive sampling. The subjects of this research were 15 students as sample.
The result of the study in passive-active translation shift Indonesia into English done by the students are there are 20% case in passive-active translation shift Indonesia into English in level shift and 20% case in passive-active translation shift Indonesia into English in category shift. Meanwhile in double shift (category shift and level shift), there is 60% case in passive-active translation shift Indonesia into English.
In conclusion, most of students of English Education Study Program in State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro are lack in mastering translation shift, especially in double shift (category and level shift). So that the result of passive-active translation shift Indonesia into English is awkward in target language and the message of source language can not be transferred communicatively well in target language.
