Abstract
Reading is one of the crucial aspects in education field. It is also one of the English skills that must be mastered by English learners. By reading the students can enhance their knowledge and learning experiences. Additionally all subjects in school have the book, so to be able to follow the lessons well students should read, because all the information required are available in the written form. To be able to read the students need to be trained and use appropriate materials and methods to make it easier and understand the read. There are many materials or kinds of text that can be used in reading comprehension. Unfortunately this has not been used optimally, therefore the students do not understand the readings that have read.
The goal of this study is to investigate whether the Descriptive Text could improve students' reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMA N I Punggur. In the pre-survey, which is conducted by researchers only 6 students from 31 students of tenth grades of SMA NI Punggur get score more than the Minimum Standard Criteria (MSC) that is 72. In this case the writer conducts classroom action research (CAR) which is done in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting. observing and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 31 the tenth grade students of SMA NI Punggur. In collecting data the writer used test, observation, documentation and field notes. The research is conducted collaboratively with an English teacher of SMA N I Punggur.
The result of the test showed that there was an increasing from pre test and post test. In the first cycle, the average score of students' product were from 20 students (64.51%) at cycle I and 30 students (96.77%) at cycle II got score more than 72. The minimum standard criteria (MSC) of the student of SMA N 1 Punggur were 72. While the increasing of students' process were 26 students (83.87%) in cycle I increased to 31 students (100%) at cycle II. It means that the result at cycle II already reached the indicator, that is 80% students get score 72 or more and the students were more active in learning process.
The conclusion of this research is, descriptive text can improve the students' reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Punggur.
