Abstract
Reading is one of an important aspect in language learning. It is one of the four language skills. It categorized into the area of a recepted skill. This category is a skill to comprehend a piece of information in the written language. This is involving ability of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. So that, it needs a suitable method to teach or learn it. Therefore, to make English learning successfull suggested to choose the good and accurate method in order to make student enjoy in learning process. One of the Methods that can be used is Grammar Translation Method. Grammar Translation Method is a traditional method which is easy used, because this method does not always uses target language but it also uses a mother tongue.so that, the students can be easy and understandable.
The aim of this research is to know the influence of using Grammar Translation Method toward the Students' narrative reading ability at the Tenth Grade of SMA N 1 SEKAMPUNG In Academic Year 2012/2013. The population in this research was 475 students. The writer used clustering sample to take the data of the students. The sample of this research is tenth grade which consists 195 students. And the writer took the sample in tenth class one (X.1) and tenth class two (X.2). In class X.2 there were 32 students as the class control and class X.1 there are 32 students as the experimental class. The writer used the True Experimental design, by applying pre-test and post-test as the instrument. In accordance with the method in this research, the writer analyzed the data by using t-test that enable to investigate the differences between the experimental class where the Grammar Translation Method was applied and the control class where the Grammar Translation Method was not applied.
Finally, the result of data analysis ilustrated that the average of experimental clas was higher (76,875) than the average of control class (72,343). The result of data analysis used t-test was Lobserved 2.885 and fouble in level 5% 1.990, 1% 2.638. It meant that Leserved was higher than fabin so, Ha can be received. It can be concluded that there were positive and significant influence of using Grammar Translation Method toward the Students' narrative reading ability at the Tenth Grade of SMANI SEKAMPUNG In Academic Year 2012/2013.
