This research aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students of the English Education Department at IAIN Metro in understanding literall reading comprehension. Literal comprehension is the most basic level of reading, involving the ability to identify explicitly stated information in a text. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, involving clasroom observaton, documentation, and interviews with selected participants. This study involved one lecturer and 10 students from literal reading comprehension class at IAIN Metro.
The findings reveal that students encounter several obstancles in literal reading comprehension, including 17% with limited vocabulary acquisition, 8% lack of background knowledge, 8% using inadequate reading strategies, and additionally 8% strunggle with making inferences outside the text. These challenges affect their ability to identify main ideas, details, and factual information in reading texts. The study suggests the need for more tergeted teaching strategies and reading practice to enhance students‟ literal comprehension abilities.
