Abstract

This study aims to improve students' reading comprehension by utilizing short comics as a learning medium. The research was conducted with 36 eighth- grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Batanghari. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection techniques included tests, observation, documentation, and field notes, all of which contributed to a comprehensive evaluation of the research‘s effectiveness.

The results revealed that comic-based learning effectively enhanced students‘ reading abilities and engagement. In the pre-test stage, the average student score was 51, with only 36.11% achieving the Minimum Completion Criteria (MCC). After implementing comic media in Cycle I, the average score increased to 65, with 55.55% of students reaching MCC. A significant improvement was observed in Cycle II, where the average score rose to 79, and 80.55% of students achieved or exceeded MCC. Furthermore, students demonstrated greater participation, improved analytical skills, and increased confidence in reading activities. These findings indicate that comic media is a powerful tool for enhancing reading comprehension and promoting active learning.

Based on these findings, the researcher concludes that the use of short comics as instructional media is an effective learning strategy to improve students' reading comprehension. These engaging and informative short comics can stimulate students interest in learning and facilitate easier absorption of information. Moreover, short comics encourage active student participation through discussions and presentations. As a result, students become more motivated and involved in the learning process, ultimately contributing to improved academic achievement. This study demonstrates that the use of authentic materials as visual media can be a powerful strategy to create an interactive and meaningful learning environment.
