Abstract

Project – based learning is an instructional method centered on the learner. PjBL is means to create an end – product in real – world environment with confidence and independence. PjBL is potentially motivating, empoering and challenging to language learners; it usually results in building learners’ confidence, self – esteem, and autonomy as well as improving students’ language skill, content learning, and cognitive abilities. PjBL can be a connection between using the target language in authentic contexts outside the classroom.

The purpose of this study is to apply project-based learning to improve the writing skills of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Batanghari which was attended by 36 students. In this study, the author used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as a research methodology consisting of planning, action, observation and reflection. Tests, observations, documentation and field notes were used as data collection methods.

The researcher then offered students one activity or treatment in each cycle as a follow-up to the results of the pre-test that had been completed. In addition, changes in each student's grades were known through the results of the post-test completed in each period. This test consists of 1 question in the form of an essay. In this case, the researcher received the results of the study based on the research conducted with an average pre-test score of 54 (13.9%), post-test 1 of 62 (64%) and post-test 2 of 69.33 (75%). As many as 90% of students passed the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) of at least 70 and it is clear that image media can improve students' descriptive writing skills. This means that this study was successful.
