Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in English, especially writing descriptive text. This study aims to analyze students' difficulties and solutions in writing descriptive text in the tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Metro.

This study used qualitative method, the researcher used instruments in the form of observation, interview, and documentation of 9 students and 1 English teacher during the learning process of writing descriptive text.

The results showed that there were three main categories of problems faced by students, namely: linguistic, psychological, and cognitive problems. Linguistic problems include limited vocabulary and understanding of grammar, psychological problems include low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and anxiety when writing, while cognitive problems relate to difficulties in composing paragraphs and using punctuation. As a solution, this study suggests using visual media to improve vocabulary and grammar mastery, creating a safe and supportive learning environment to increase students' self-confidence, and applying scaffolding strategies and collaborative approaches in writing to overcome difficulties in paragraph organization and punctuation. It is expected that with the application of these strategies, students' ability to write descriptive text can improve gradually and effectively.
