Abstract
This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Story Mapping Strategy in reading skill of seventh-grade students at SMPN 6 Metro. Reading skill is a crucial aspect of English learning, yet many students struggle to identify key elements such as main ideas, supporting details, and the structure of a text. The Story Mapping Strategy, which visually organizes descriptive components like setting, characters, plot, conflict, and resolution, is expected to enhance students’ understanding and retention of reading materials.
This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design, involving two groups: an experimental group taught using the Story Mapping Strategy and a control group taught through conventional methods. Pre- test and post-test results were analyzed using statistical methods to determine the effectiveness of the strategy. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group showed significantly higher effective in reading skill scores compared to those in the control group.
Hypothetical test was used to measure the effect of using Story Mapping in teaching reading skill of the seven grade of Junior High School 6 Metro. The criteria of acceptance of rejection of hypothesis for the hypothetical T- test was Ha accepted if Sig.Value <a 0.05. Ho is accepted if Sig.Value > a 0.05. if Ha is accepted, it means that there is a positive a significant effect of using Story Mapping in teaching reading skill. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Story Mapping Strategy is an effective strategy to effectiveness in reading skill among seventh-grade students.
