Abstract

Gerund is a verb-ing functioning as a noun or adjective. This -ing form is a part of noun and a part of verb since it is formed from a verb. Meanwhile, gerund in sentence is composed of the gerund and any words organized with it. Like nouns, commonly, gerund in sentence may function as subjects, complements, direct object, object after preposition and after no-negative form. But, in this research, the researcher limited the research in gerund as subject, as complement and as direct object. Because of gerund formed by verb, the students at tenth graders of SMK Ma'arif NU 04 Darurrohmah Banding Sukadana still confuse in differing the function of gerund. Some of them still think that gerund is verb.

The primary goal of this research was to know the mistakes of using gerund in sentence at tenth graders of SMK Ma'arif NU 04 Darurrohmah. A qualitative descriptive was used to approach the data. The writer took 16 students' answer sheets at tenth graders of SMK Ma'arif NU 04 Darurrohmah Banding Sukadana as the purposive sample.

In this research, the researcher collected the data by observation, interview and documentation. And the researcher used comparative taxonomy to observe and analyze the error of the using gerund in sentence. Comparative taxonomy is based on comparison between the structures of second language errors and certain other types of construction.

The data that is collected from the research, found the mistakes of using gerund in sentence are, gerund as subject has 36.08%, gerund as complement 22.68 % and gerund as direct object 41.24%. Accordingly, the errors that happen most are gerund as direct object. And the smallest mistakes are Gerund as complement.
