Abstract

This research is classroom action research (CAR) that purpose to implement skimming technique to increase the students' reading ability. Skimming is a reading technique necessary for quick and efficient reading. The research was done at the eighth graders students of SMPN I Sipang Pemataug, Mesuji. The research was conducting in two cycles. Between one cycle with the other has relationship. They were including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, test, and filed note. The test was consisting of pre test and post test. The purpose of pre test and post test were to know how far the increasing of the students' reading ability before and after given the treatment. The result of the research is the students able to understand the reading material quickly in finding main idea, general description, and purpose of the text, and the students' result had achieved the minimum mastery criteria (70).

The result of pre test and post test showed that there were increased from pre test and post test. The average score of post test was higher than pre test. The average score of pre test was 54.46, then the average score of post test cycle I was 60.71, and the average score of post test cycle Il was 73.57. From pre test to the post test cycle I, there were increased for about 6.25 points, and from the post test cycle I to the post test cycle 11, there were increased for about 12.86 points. Beside of the result of pre test and post test, the result of the observation also showed that there were increased of the students' activities from post test cycle I to the post test cycle II. The percentage of the students' activities in the post test cycle I were 71.42 %, then, the percentage in the post test cycle II were 89.29 %. So, were increased for about
17.87 %.

Based on the explanation above. it can be conclude that by using skimming technique, will be able to increase the students' reading ability at the eighth graders of SMPN I Simpang Pematang, Mesuji.
