Abstract

Reading is one of four basic language skills that should be mastered by the students. By reading, the students get much knowledge, information, and all they need in the learning process. Moreover, students often ignored to mastering this skill. This condition which was researcher found at the eleventh graders of SMAN 5 Metro where many students had difficulties in English learning especially in reading comprehension ability, so it caused their result of learning was low. Hence, to increase the students' reading comprehension ability, the researcher used Jigsaw in learning process. Jigsaw is one of strategy that effective and easy to be applied in the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this research was to know whether the use of Jigsaw can increase the students' reading comprehension ability in English learning.

The kind of this research was classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Object of this research was the students' reading comprehension ability. In collecting the data, the researcher used test, observation, and documentation. This research was conducted with an English teacher of SMAN 5 Metro that was Mrs. Dian Puspita, S.Pd.

The result of this research showed that Jigsaw had positive role in increasing the reading comprehension ability at the eleventh graders of SMAN 5 Metro. It can be proved by the students' average score from pre test to post test. The average score in pre test was 60.79 and in post test was 69.19 became 77.74. It means that the using of Jigsaw in reading especially narrative text can increase the students' reading comprehension ability.
