Abstract

Writing is one of English skills. It needs some elements that scientifically influence its quality. The materials of highlighted parts which should be seriously paid attention are clauses and phrases. Clauses and phrases are almost used in every activity in learning English. Nevertheless, it is not an easy thing for some English learners.

The problem the writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of clauses and phrases mastery. The primary goal of this research, furthermore, was to figure out common mistakes which are done in the students' analysis of a text in State Islamic College of Jurai Siwo Metro. A qualitative case study was used to approach the data. The writer took 10 students of the fourth grade to analize the text. The data were collected by observation, documentation and in-depth interview. Miles and Huberman model was used to analyze the data.

Regarding to the process of researching, the writer, firstly, collected the data analysis taken from l O fourth grade students. Then, the writer observed them by finding the mistakes. In addition, the mistakes were reduced by classifying them into some parts, they are independent clause, noun clause, adjective clause, adverb clause, noun phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase,verb phrase, andpreposition phrase.

After that, the writer displayed all the result of his findings. The result of analysis illustrated the frequency of analysis mistakes, such as : independent clauses were 3 items (9%), noun clause was 1 item (3%), adjective clause was 1 item (3%), adverb clause was I item (3%), noun phrases were 14 items (39%), adjective phrase was 2 item (6%), adverb phrases were 2 items (6%), verb phrases were 7 items (19%), and preposition phrases were 4 items (12%). In conclusion, there are still many mistakes in the analysis clauses and phrases of the fourth semester English students of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. The mistakes are caused by the low understanding of clauses and phrases' concept
