Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know wether there is any correlation between students' interest in English subject and reading comprehension at the eleventh graders of SMA N 4 Metro in the academic year of 2013/2014.

This research was conducted at the eleventh graders of SMA N 4 Metro. The subject of this research was consisting 33 students. This research was quantitative research design. The writer used test method to get data about reading comprehension of the students, questionnaire method to get data about the students' interest in English subject, documentation method was used to get information about the description of area research generally and information about English learning process especially the students' interest in English subject and reading comprehension. The test method data is processed by product moment correlation formulation.

To investigate whether there is any positive significant correlation between the students' interest in English subject and reading comprehension, so the writer analyzes the data by using product moment correlation. The results of data analysis; "T observed" is 0.800 and "r table" is 5% (0.355) or 1% (0.456). Therefore, it can be inferred that Hi is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is any positive and significant correlation between students' interest in English subject and reading comprehension at the eleventh graders of SMA N 4 metro.

Finally, based on analysis above, it can be inferred that correlation between students' interest in English subject and reading comprehension at the eleventh graders of SMA N 4 Metro in the academic year of 2013/2014 is 64%, by counting the quadrate of "r observed" and multiplying it by 100% %, (r observed )2 x 100% =(0.800) x 100% = 64%
