Abstract
Writing is one of some important abilities which must be mastered by the students. They must be able to write well in English subject. In fact, many students face difficulties in writing English, especially in argumentative text writing. Therefore, to be able to write argumentative text they must have a good reasoning performance. Argumentative text writing is the difficulties one of English subject that they felt This was caused by the student inability to associate technique to overcome the weakness. The researcher tried to apply the concept mapping technique to make the students easier in writing of an argumentative text of scientific writing.
The purpose of this research was to apply the concept mapping and analyze its influence in the argumentative text writing ability of the students of the fourth semester of the English Department of the State Islamic College (STAIN) of Jurai Siwo Metro. In this research the researcher gave pre-test to know the students' ability in argumentative text writing and post-test to know the result of the students' ability in argumentative text writing after giving the concept mapping technique.
In this study, the researcher used the Quantitative research in the form of true experimental design with applying pre-test and post-test control group design. The population of study was students from the fourth semester of the English Department of the State Islamic College (STAIN) of Jurai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2011/2012. The amounts of sample was 63 students. The data were analyzed by using tees for examining the differences between the experimental class (applying concept mapping) and the control class (class without applying concept mapping).
From all of data analysis, it can be seen that tobserved is higher than ttable Therefore it can be inferred that Hi is accepted. It means that there is a positive and significant difference between experimental and control class at the fourth semester of the English Department of the State Islamic College (STAIN) of J urai Siwo Metro in the academic year of 2011/2012. The findings of the study indicate that concept mapping is successful in increasing students' writing an argumentative text of scientific writing ability. The improvement can be seen from the increase of the students' mean scores and the students' involvement in writing activities. In conclusion, the applying of concept mapping technique in prewriting stage is suitable to help the students improve their writing ability, especially in writing an argumentative text of scientific writing.
