Abstract

Language is system of communication in speech and writing. In our country, Indonesia, English is as the first language has been taught in junior high school and senior high. But in senior high school, structure and grammar is very important. When the students understand about grammar they will easy in writing and speaking. The important one is the student have to know about tenses. The differences between English and Indonesian grammar system caused difficulties among the students of Senior High School to understand English. For example, if a sentence "Dia (laki-laki) membeli dua buku kemarin translated into English grammatically, it should be "He bought two books yesterday and not "She bring two book yesterday'. It can be understood that the verb in English grammatical system should be changed according to the form of subject, time and quantities, while in bahasa Indonesia it is should not. This difficulties became worse because the student has lack mastery in structure and grammar. The writer found this condition at the eleventh grade of SMK Kartikatama 1 Metro. Therefore this research was aimed to analyse grammtical error of the students transforming in simple present tense to simple past tense. This research used qualilative research. The population of this research was the students at the eleventh grade of Vocational High School Kartikatama I Metro in academic year 2012/2013. There is one class which consists of 33. The data collection method was observation, documentation and questionnaire.

Based on result of research more than 75% the students get score under 50. It means that many students dont understand well with grammar subject. Some of students got difficulty in choosing suitable grammar and have low competence in grammar subject. Besides that, the result of the analysis data inferred that the frequency students grammatical error in the students transforming from simple present tense to simple past tense are grammatical errors in nominal sentence was 21 %, in verbal sentence was 13%, in adverb of time was 25%, in negative sentence was 21% and 20 % in introgative sentence.
