Abstract

Based on Elementary school curriculum, the students are hoped to make a simple sentence and expected to understand about word and phrase. In fact, most of students find the difficulty in making sentence especially in phrase construction. The object of this research is 21 students of class V of SDN 1 Raman Fajar in the academic year of 2011/2012. From the result of pre survey, it shows that the mean score is 44,28 and there are 17 students who get score under 60 (80,95).

The objectives of this research are to know whether pictures can increase students' phrase mastery and find out whether pictures can make the learning process interested. This action research is done in six meetings and each meeting lasts two times thirty five minutes (70 minutes). Two cуcles are conducted, and each cycle consists of planning, action, observing, reflecting. During the cycles, the students are given pretest and post test.

In collecting the data, the researcher uses tests; they are pretest and post test, and observation. The purpose of pretest and post test are to know how far the students have mastered phrase before and after being given the treatment. When observe the teaching and learning, the writer knows how the process is held. The researcher observe the teaching and learning process by using observation sheet.

The result of the first treatment in the first cycle shows that the target has not been achieved because the mean score is 46,42 and there are 16 students who get score under 60 (76,19%). In the second treatment in the second cycle, the mean score is 62,14 and there are 6 students who get score under 60 (28,57 %). All students look active during the teaching learning process. It means that the target of mastery learning has been achieved.
