Abstract

In the language teaching and learning process, it has been known that writing plays an essential part for student's to express their knowledge in the form of essay, paper, and job aplication; moreover the students were found the difficulties in writing especially in descriptive text. The problems came from the technique which has no spesific one to be implemented in increasing students skill, and then lack of grammar understanding also became one of the lackness which added the students' difficulties in writing descriptive text. Using semantic mapping technique can be good alternative to make the students' better in writing descriptive text. Semantic mapping is a way of teaching writing whime students make their own word diagram that use lines, boxes arrow, and circles to show relationship among the ideas and details. Through semantic mapping technique, the student also find out related words, ideas, concept or question as many as possible to the topic given, so the students can apply semantic in their writing.The primary goal of this research is to figure out the use of semantic mapping technique to increase the tenth grade students' writing performance in descriptive text at SMA Negeri 1 Pekalongan. The use of semantic mapping technique is the effort of the researchim to solve the problems of X students in writing descriptive text.

This research was classroom action research which takes two cycles. Each cycle of this study contains four steps. The first step is planning the action; in this stage prepares the form of lesson plan. The second is implementing the action; implements semantic mapping technique based on lesson plan. Third is observing, the real English teachim acts observer and observes the classroom activities using semantic mapping technique in the class. The last step is reflecting, in this stage that is evaluated the action and what should be revised for the next cycle. Then, analyzed the data to used pre-test and post-test.

The finding research showed that the average of students' score in pre-test was 70.2, the post-test 1 was 70.4 and the post-test 2 was 81.2. The increasing score betwen post-test 1 and post-test 2 is 9.7. The percentage of students who success in second cycle is 85 %. It is greater than 75 % which has been set by the researchim up in this study. The conclusion of this research was using semantic mapping technique to increase students' writing performance in descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Pekalongan is successful.
