Abstract

Speaking skill is one of four basic language skills that must be mastered by the students. It is the skill of the students when they are able to make sounds, words, phrases, and discource forms that characterize any language so that created the interactive of communication. Morever, students are often ignored to mastering this skills. It caused by several problems, such as: teacher have not many various technique to teach speaking skills, students are lack speaking skills, Students are not interested in speaking material, and etc. Therefore, to increase their speaking skills, the researcher used oral drill technique in learning process.

This research was aimed to know the level of speaking skills and to finding out the increasing speaking skills through the oral drill in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro. It was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the subject of this research are the students of VIII.1 graders in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro. And the researcher asked Mrs. Ibtidaiyah, S.Pd as the collaborator in this research. Then, to collecting data, the researcher uses: test (pre-test and post-test), observation, and field notes. While, to analyzing the data, the researcher used deductive descriptive.

The average result score of pre-test and post-test shows that there is progressing score. The average score at pre-test = 53.3, and in post-test I = 61.5, it was increase 8.2 point. And then, the average score at post-test II = 68. It was increase 6.5 point better than post-test 1. While, the percentages of the student's pass at pre-test = 23.3% of total students, and at post-test I = 50%, and then, at post-test II = 76.6% students who are able passed the exam. Based on the result above, It can be said that oral drill can increase speaking skills. This technique makes the students are interested and motivated in the class. So that, they are felt so enjoy to doing the task. And, It also makes them easier in studying the materials.
