Abstract

The primary goal of this research was to investigate the influence of teamsgames-tournaments method toward the students speaking ability in SMP Beringin Ratu Serupa Indah Way Kanan. This research was conducted among 44 students at the eight grade of SMP Beringin Ratu Serupa Indah Way Kanan in the academic year of 2013/2014. In fact, most of the students have not reached a predetermined Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) because they have difficulties in speaking ability. Therefore, it was need a suitable method to overcome the students' weakness. Method that can be used was TGT method.

This research is quantitative research in the form of quasi experiment. The writer used test and documentation as the data collection method. To investigate whether there is a positive and significant influence of using TGT method toward the students speaking ability, the writer analyzed the data by using t-test for paired samples formula.

This research shows that, the Mean score of post-test was higher (70.114) than the Mean of pre-test (59.182). It can be concluded that teaching speaking using TGT method gives positive and significant influence toward the students speaking ability. The result of data analysis using t-test was t-observed = 9.108 and Lable = 5%: 2.0105 and 1%: 2.682. It means that tobserved was higher than ttable. Based on the result of analysis data above, it can be said that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It can be inferred that there is a positive and significant influence of using TGT method toward the students speaking ability at the eighth graders students of SMP Beringin ratu Serupa Indah Way kanan in the academic year of 2013/2014.
