Abstract

The aimof the researchwasto show that the use of information gap activity technique couldimprovethe speaking skill and learning activitiesat the eighth graders of SMP N 10 Metro.The problem which had been identified wasthatthe students had lack of opportunities to practice speaking in the classsroom.

The research was Classroom Action Research(CAR). In order to get the accuracy in data collecting, the researcher useddata collecting technique such as test, observation, and documentation. This research used two cyclesthat consisted of four stages: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This research was conducted on July 18th, 2017 untilAugust 15th, 2017 that involvedthe eighth graders which consisted of 28 students.

The finding of the research showedthat the use of information gap activity technique improvedthe students speaking skill and also students’ learning activities. The improvement of the students’ speaking skillprovedby the result of the students speaking score. In post test I, the average score of the students speaking skill was 68,2 and in the post test II was 75,1. Theimprovement was 6,9from post test I to post test II. Then, the improvement of the students’ learning activity prove by the result of the students observation sheet. In cycle I, there were65% and in cycle II, there were95% of the students which were active in the speaking class.It was improve 30 points.
