Abstract

Reading is one of four basic language skills that shouldbe mastered by the students. By reading, the students get much knowledge, information, and all they need in the learning process.Moreover, students often ignored to mastering this skill. This conditionwhich wasresearcher foundat the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Terbanggi Besar where many students haddifficulties in English learning especially in reading skill, so it caused their result of learning waslow. Hence, to improvethe students‟ reading skill, the researcher usedGraphic Organizers in learning process. Graphic Organizersis one of techniquethat effective and easy to be applied in the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this researchwasto know whether the useof Graphic Organizers can improvethe students‟ reading skill in English learning.

The kindof this research was classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Objectof this research wasthestudents‟reading skill. In collecting the data, the researcher used test, observation, and documentation. This research was conducted with an English teacher of SMPN 3 Terbanggi Besar.

The result of this research showed that Graphic Organizers had positive role in improvingthe reading skill at the eighth graders of 3 Terbanggi Besar. It can be proved by the students‟ average score from pre test to post test. The average score in pre test was 58.54 and in post test was 67.09became 76.12. It means that the using of Graphic Organizers in reading especially narrative text can improvethe students‟ reading skill.Key words: Reading skill, Graphic Organizers, Classroom Action Research, etc.
