Abstract

Writing is one of the most difficult language skills that should be mastered by students in learning English. In writing there are several kinds of text such as narrative, descriptive, argumentative, and persuasive. Descriptive text is one of text which has to be mastered by the eighth grade students of the Junior High School. But, there are some problems that faced by the eighth grade students of the Junior High School 2 Purbolinggo Lampung Timur in writing descriptive text. So it caused the result of learning is low. Therefore, to increase the descriptive writing skill among the students, the writer used Roundtable Technique in learning process. Roundtable Technique is one of techniques that used in teaching writing by means to stimulate students’ ideas. The goal of this research is to know whether Roundtable Technique can increase the descriptive writing skill among the eighth grade students of the state Junior High School 2 Purbolinggo Lampung Timur.

This research was classroom action research (CAR) which involved 25 students in class VIII C and was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were taken from writing test to figure out the students’ knowledge in writing descriptive text. Furthermore, the writer used observation technique to get the data about students’ learning activities. The writer also used the documentation method to support the information concerning on the learning English. This research was conducted with an English teacher of State Junior High School 2 Purbolinggo Lampung Timur.

The result of this research shows that Roundtable Technique has positive role in increasing the descriptive writing skill among the eighth grade students of the State Junior High School 2 Purbolinggo Lampung Timur. It can be proved by the students’ average score from pre test post test. The average score in pre test was 41, in post test 1 was 65 and the post test 2 was 75. It can be inferred that Roundtable Technique can increase the descriptive writing skill among the eighth students of the State Junior High School 2 Purbolinggo Lampung Timur.
