Abstract
Engage,Study, and Activate (ESA), is one of the methods to help the students to learn language easily. In this research the skill of language focused on writing performance. This method was applied to the students by using the narrative text because it was easier for them than the others text.
The problem, the researcher had outlined in this research was wntmg performance. The primary goal of this research was to know the ESA method in increasing the students' writing performance at the eight graders of SMP PGRI 2 Batanghari in academic year 20 11/2012. This research was Classroom Action Research (CAR).
Regarding to the research process, the researcher gave the pre-test to the students to know the score of writing performance. Then, the researcher did the treatment to the students. In addition, the progress of the students' writing performance could be known through the post-test in every cycle. The result of the research illustrated the average of the students' score in pre-test was 26 (4%), post-test 1 was 52.1 (52%), and post-test 2 was 62.1 (76%).
In conclusion, it may be stated that ESA is an effective method to increase the students' writing performance at the eight graders of SMP PGRl 2 Batanghari in academic year 2011/2012.
