Abstract

Speaking performance is one of four basic language skills that must be mastered by the students. It is the skills of the students when they are able making sounds, words, phrases, and discource forms that characterize any language so that created the interactive of communication. Morever, students are often ignored to mastering this skills. It caused by several problems. such as: teacher have not many various technique to teach speaking skills, students are lack speaking skills, Students are not interested in speaking material, and etc. Therefore, to increase their speaking skills. the researcher used total physical response method in learning process.

This research was aimed to know the level of speaking skills and to finding out the increasing speaking skills through the total physical response method in SMP Negeri 2 Pubian. It was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the subject of this research are the students of VIII.2 graders in SMP Negeri 2 Pubian. Then, to collect the data, the researcher uses: test (pre-test and post-test), observation. While, to analyzing the data, the researcher used deductive descriptive.

The average result score of pre-test and post-test shows that there is progressing score. The average score at pre-test = 54.41, and in post-test I = 68.52, it was increase 14.11 point. And then, the average score at post-test 11 = 81.02. It was increase 12.5 point better than post-test 1. While, the percentages of the student's pass at pre-test = 26 % of total students, and at post-test I = 56 %, and then, at post-test II = 94 % students who are able passed the exam. Based on the result above, It can be said that total physical response method can increase speaking skills. This technique makes the students are interested and motivated in the class. So that, they are felt so enjoy to doing the task. And, It also makes them easier in studying the materials.
