Abstract

Reading is one of the language skills that should be mastered by students when following all aspects of learning English in the school. The primary goal of this research was to investigate the influence of using Semantic Mapping strategy toward the students' reading comprehension. This research was conducted among 27 students of the eighth graders of State Junior High School I of Kotagajah Central Lampung in the academic year of 2013/2014. In the school, most of the students did not fulfill the Criteria of Standard Minimum (KKM) because they are difficult in reading comprehension especially reading text. In this research, researcher used semantic mapping strategy to overcome it.

The research used the quantitative research design in the form of quasi• experiment. The research used observation, documentation and test (pre-test and post• test) as the data collection method. To investigate whether there is a positive and significant influence of using semantic mapping strategy toward the students' reading comprehension, the researcher analyzed the gata by using T-test formula.

The result of research showed that, the mean of post-test score (88.89) was higher than the mean of pre-test score (65.56). The result of data analysis using T-test formula, t observed = ] 2.095 higher than t table = 2.056 (5%) and 2.799 (1%) It can be inferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. lt means that there is a positive and significant effectiveness of using Semantic Mapping strategy to improve the students' reading comprehension among the eighth graders of State Junior High School l of Kotagajah Central Lampung in the academic year of 2013/2014.
